What documents do you need to get married as a foreigner?
Anyone can get married in Germany - including, of course, anyone who does not have German citizenship. Even if both partners are foreigners, nothing stands in the way of a marriage. Marriage before a German registry office is also possible without residency or permanent residence in Germany. However, foreigners usually have to present additional documents in person and these often have to be accompanied by a certified translation.
It is best to find out from your local registry office which documents are required before a marriage. Do this as early as possible so that nothing stands in the way of your wedding at the desired time. We have prepared a checklist to give you an overview of the documents you are likely to need in advance.
The registry office usually requires these documents from foreigners who want to get married in Germany:
1. ID with photo
You can show your national passport, passport, ID card, identity card, for example. Unfortunately, driving licenses cannot be used as proof of identity here. We translate your identity documents and certify them directly. With us, you can have your identity card translated by a certified translator and order the certified translation of your passport online.
2. certificate of no impediment to marriage
You need this certificate to prove that there is no legal impediment to marriage. You can easily have your certificate of no impediment to marriage certified here.
3. birth certificate
You usually need a birth certificate to get married in Germany. If you were not born in Germany and have a foreign birth certificate, this should be translated into German and notarized. The date of issue of the certified translation is very important here. This must not be more than 6 months in the past. It must also really be a birth certificate. A baptismal certificate is not sufficient. In the case of naturalization in Germany, the naturalization certificate must be presented. We are happy to help you: At Beglaubigung24 you can have your birth certificate translated in just a few clicks - including certification by a sworn translator.
4. certificate of unmarried status
You will probably need a certificate of unmarried status in order to get married. In some cases, this is also noted on the certificate of residence. We will provide you with a certified translation of your certificates within a few working days.
5. registration and residence certificate
A registration certificate or residence certificate is required for a marriage in Germany. If this is not available in German because you are not resident in Germany, you must ask for the certificate to be translated and certified. If you need this certificate, we will be happy to help you with a certified translation of the certificate.
