Frequently asked questions about marriage certificate translations

When do I need a certified translation for a marriage certificate?

In general, certified translations are also accepted by foreign authorities, courts and government agencies. Anyone who has to show their marriage certificate abroad after marriage will need an official translation by a sworn translator. Our translators are state-certified and authorised to translate and certify documents and certificates like these so that they are valid abroad.

Where can I have a marriage certificate translated?

A marriage certificate is an official document and usually requires a certified translation in order to be accepted abroad. You should always use a specialised translation agency to have this type of document translated. State-certified and sworn translators translate documents and certificates in this case, and are also authorised to certify them. If you’re looking for a specialised translation agency such as this, then you’ve come to exactly the right place.

How much does a certified translation of a marriage certificate cost?

You can get a certified translation of your marriage certificate for a fair price of 56.50 € (depending on the number of pages and language combination). This includes the translation service, the fast processing by our sworn translators and the certification with stamp and signature.

Which languages are available for the translation of my marriage certificate?

At Beglaubigung24 you can order certified translations in 19 language combinations. One of the two languages, i.e. the source or target language, should be German.

Our language combinations are:

German - English

Who translates and certifies marriage certificates?

Like most official documents, marriage certificates are only translated by sworn translators. In our case, in Germany, they are authorised translators who have taken a general oath before a regional or higher regional court or an authority for domestic affairs. They are certified and have the appropriate authorisation and qualifications to translate and certify content in specific languages.

How do I set the number of pages?

A single page means one side of one sheet of paper – irrespective of the number of words on that page. The front and back sides of a double-sided document are considered two separate pages. All relevant pages in the original document are counted for the translation. The ‘number of pages’ comprises the total number of individual pages. Learn more here.

Will my data and information contained in the documents be kept confidential?

Of course, we handle all data we receive from you or from your documents with the utmost confidentiality - you can be sure of that! Because: In addition to certifications for translation services (ISO 17100) and quality management (ISO 9001), our service has an excellent information security management system according to ISO/IEC 27001.

  • Why exactly?

Marriage certificates are official documents and are therefore not accepted abroad in the form of a simple translation. In other words: If a foreign authority requires your marriage certificate, you will need a certified translation of it. But in what circumstances would this even happen? The occasion might be pleasant, or else less pleasant: Recognition of a marriage, adoption of a child abroad, or death or inheritance abroad, divorce abroad, name changes in official documentation, becoming naturalised in another country or applying for citizenship.

Regardless of what applies to your situation, at Beglaubigung24 we’ll take care of it: certified translations of German marriage certificates into other languages, and translating and certifying foreign documents for German authorities.

  • Married in Germany and living abroad

A marriage which takes place in Germany is generally recognised abroad – if you can prove it accordingly. The easiest way to do this is with a certified translation. The registry office does not normally issue these official translations; instead, specialised translation agencies working with sworn translators are responsible for them. It’s best to obtain information about the requirements of the relevant foreign authority at an early stage. If a certified translation of your German marriage certificate is included, we’d be very happy to help you.

  • A wedding abroad – and then moving to Germany

Whether you’re getting hitched in Vegas, the Canary Islands or on the other side of the world – if you opt for an exotic wedding destination and want to live in Germany afterwards, you cannot avoid the process of having the marriage recognised by a German registry office. In this case, a foreign marriage certificate is usually only accepted if translated and certified. In other cases, too (e.g. naturalisation or a name change in the identity document), the German authorities usually require a certified translation of the marriage certificate.

  • Your union as a couple – protected by our triple certification

There’s not much we can add to your happiness when you get married, but we can at least make the bureaucratic aspects a little easier to handle. Our state-certified and sworn translators will provide you with certified translations of your marriage certificate that are recognised in the respective country. Our service also has triple ISO certification: for our translation services (ISO 17100:2015), our quality management (ISO-9001:2015) and our information security (ISO/IEC 27001:2013).

  • When do I need a translation of my marriage certificate?

Foreign agencies or public authorities require a certified translation of a marriage certificate for a variety of matters, which usually include one of the following cases:

    - Recognition of marriage in a foreign country
    - Adoption
    - Divorce
    - Application for citizenship
    - Naturalisation
    - Death
    - Inheritance

  • What do I need to have my marriage certificate translated?

For the translation of your marriage certificate you only need the original document. Upload the document as a scan or photo at the top of this page and order a certified translation in just a few clicks. If you open this page via your smartphone or tablet, you can also quickly and easily photograph the marriage certificate in the ordering process.
