  • Driving requires permission!

You have a driving licence, but not one that is valid in the EU? Then you’ll need either an international driving permit or a certified translation of your licence. We’re happy to take care of the latter for you. We translate your German driving licence into the target language you need, or your foreign driving licence into German — so you’re allowed to drive anywhere. Whether it’s a car, motorcycle, scooter, truck, motorboat, forklift …

    *Note!
In some cases, German authorities require an additional classification for driving licences from non-EU countries, in addition to the certified translation. We do not currently offer this service — but soon you’ll be able to order a licence including classification from us as well. Whether you need a classification is determined by your local driving licence authority. Please check with the authority responsible for you.

3. Have your certified translation prepared

From here on, we take the wheel and forward your order directly to our sworn translators. They translate your driving licence into the desired target language, format the translation and certify it. Afterwards, we send the officially certified driving licence translation your way. Within a very short time, it will arrive in your email inbox as a PDF and in your mailbox as a hard copy.

And if you’re happy with it, feel free to leave us a positive review.

Frequently asked questions about driving licence translations

Why do I need a certified translation for my driving licence?

In other countries, your valid driver’s license is not always recognized as an official driving permit. Depending on the issuing country and intended use, you may need a verified translation of your license in order to drive legally. Such a certified or official translation confirms the authenticity of the original license and entitles you to drive abroad as well. As an alternative, an international driving permit may also be accepted.

When do I need to have my driving licence translated?

Whether you need a translation of your driver’s license depends on two factors: the country where it was issued and the country where you intend to use it. Licenses issued in an EU country are generally valid throughout the EU. You usually need to have your license translated when the original document is not accepted as an official driving permit in the country you are visiting. In that case, you will need a certified translation prepared by sworn translators.

How much does a certified translation of my driving licence cost?

The cost of a certified translation is usually made up of three elements—regardless of the document type: the translation work itself, the certification of the translation, and the chosen language combination. At Beglaubigung24, you can get a certified translation of your driver’s license starting at €48.90. All translations are carried out by state-certified translators and officially verified.

What languages can I have my driver's license translated into?

At Beglaubigung24 you can order certified translations in 19 language combinations. One of the two languages, i.e. the source or target language, should be German.

Our language combinations are:

German - English
English - German
French - German
Spanish - German

Who translates and certifies driver’s licenses?

Only sworn translators should translate a driver’s license – as well as any other official document. As authorised translators who have taken an oath at a regional court, higher regional court or an interior authority, they are state-certified and officially entitled to translate and certify documents in other languages.

How do I set the number of pages?

A single page means one side of one sheet of paper – irrespective of the number of words on that page. The front and back sides of a double-sided document are considered two separate pages. All relevant pages in the original document are counted for the translation. The ‘number of pages’ comprises the total number of individual pages. Learn more here.

Will my data and information contained in the documents be kept confidential?

Of course, we handle all data we receive from you or from your documents with the utmost confidentiality - you can be sure of that! Because: In addition to certifications for translation services (ISO 17100) and quality management (ISO 9001), our service has an excellent information security management system according to ISO/IEC 27001.

  • Anyone wishing to drive a car (or any other motor vehicle) abroad should always make sure that their national driving licence is valid beyond their home country’s borders. One option is to apply for an international driving permit at your local licensing authority (for a fee). Another option is to get a certified translation of your driving licence — and that’s where we are the experts. If you’re planning your next trip abroad, you should take a look at our tips.

  • Driving abroad with a German driving licence

The German driving licence is essentially equivalent to an EU driving licence, as German licences are generally recognised and valid in all countries of the European Union. Things can be different, however, when travelling in non-EU countries. In such cases, you may need a certified translation of your driving licence. We create this for you quickly and with certification in just a few days, so nothing stands in the way of your next trip abroad.

  • Driving in Germany on a foreign driving licence

With a driver’s license from an EU or EEA country, you can usually drive on German roads without needing a translation. However, this does not always apply to non-EU citizens with a license from their home country. If the license is not accepted and the stay in Germany is temporary (usually less than six months), a certified translation into German is required. If you need such a translation, you can easily order it at the top of this page.

Regardless of whether you have a German or a foreign driver’s license, we recommend checking the specific regulations of the country you plan to drive in before you travel.

  • Safety first – that’s why we’ve got three types of certification

If you need to present your translated driving licence abroad (e.g., when renting a car or during a police check), a simple translation is not sufficient as an official document. To ensure that your licence is accepted without any issues in such situations, all translations at our company are carried out exclusively by sworn translators who are authorised to certify official documents. In addition, our service is triple ISO-certified: for our translation services (ISO 17100:2015), our quality management (ISO 9001:2015) and our information security (ISO/IEC 27001:2013).

  • Where can I have my driver's license translated?

The translation of a driver’s license can be carried out by sworn translators or issued by official automobile clubs. You can obtain a recognized translation at selected ADAC branches or – quickly and easily – in our online shop. Simply upload your document, select the source and target language, and place your order. Within just a few days, we will produce a certified translation of your driver’s license that is also accepted abroad.

  • In which countries is the German driver's license not recognized?

The German driver’s license is recognized both within the European Union (EU) and in the countries of the European Economic Area (EEA). It is also valid in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Switzerland, and Turkey. Outside these countries, the German driver’s license is not sufficient to operate a motor vehicle. To drive a car or another type of vehicle abroad, you must apply for an international driver’s license or have your driver’s license certified and translated.

  • Is a foreign driver's license also valid in Germany?

If you come from a country within the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and travel to Germany, you generally do not need to have your driver’s license translated. This also applies to people from Andorra, Hong Kong, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, San Marino or Senegal. If you come from another country and are staying in Germany temporarily, you may drive a vehicle if you A) hold a valid national driver’s license, or B) carry an international driver’s license or a certified translation of your driver’s license.
If you stay in Germany for more than 185 days and register a residence here, you must have your foreign driver’s license converted. The authorities require the original document and a certified translation of the driver’s license for this process.

  • How long is the translation of the driver's license valid?

The certified translation of the driver’s license is valid for exactly as long as the original. We only translate the content of the document, including the expiry date. Only once you receive a new driver’s license after it expires will you need a new translation as well.
